Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Who can participate in the competition?
A. Undergraduate and graduate industrial design students currently enrolled at a school or university and graduates from 2011 and later.
Q. I’m not studying Industrial Design but I really want to enter Electrolux Design Lab, can I enter?
A. Electrolux Design Lab is open to Industrial Design Students and recent Industrial Design Graduates (graduation taking place in 2011 or anytime after) that have not started working in the field. The field is ‘restricted’ in this manner as the first prize entails a work placement of six-months that requires industrial design capabilities and the prize is not split e.g. the cash prize can not be awarded independently without the six month work placement. Thus, in order to enter the contest you need to have industrial design capabilities.

• Low-resolution images/sketches of the concept or solution.

Q. What is the brief and judging criteria?
Brief: Design Experience
Electrolux Design Lab 2012 invites industrial design students and recent industrial design graduates (2011) to draw inspiration from professional experience creators (chefs, architects, interior designers, hotel designers etc.) to design home appliances that will provide a fuller sensory experience. It might be through state of the art technology or it might be through a clever blend of textures and surfaces. Your ideas will shape how people prepare and store food, clean and do their dishes, both within and beyond the home.
Additionally, and in keeping with the heritage of Electrolux, your concept should reflect Scandinavian Design values – being sensitive to the environment, providing intuitive ease of use and aesthetic appeal.
Ten finalists will each be invited to participate in a final event in the autumn of 2012 held within a European city (to be announced) to present their individual concept to a jury of expert designers. The jury will consider entries based on intuitive design, innovation and consumer insight.
Q. What are the prizes?
A. First prize: 5,000 Euro and six-month paid internship at one of the Electrolux Group’s global design centers; Second prize: 3,000 Euro; Third prize: 2,000 Euro.
