Peter Alwin, studying at the National Institute of Design in India, was awarded first place in the 2010 Electrolux Design Lab competition. The Snail, Peter’s micro induction heating concept, beat a field of 1,300 entries and seven other finalists at 100% Design, London 23rd September 2010.

The Electrolux Design Lab final takes place on Thursday 23rd September, at 100% Design. All of the student concepts will be on display for four days. The first day will see the students present their concepts live in front of an esteemed design jury who will decide this year’s winner. The all day event (taking place at the Botanic Theatre in the exhibition space) will be streamed live over the internet on this site. From 24th-26th September the concepts move to the Electrolux stand (K62). If you are coming to visit here are some images to help you find us. If you can’t make it personally, then this post might help you imagine being there.
The stand, designed by BarberOsgerby and Universal Design Studio, reflects Electrolux Scandinavian Design values – providing a sleek, functional and attractive space with minimal impact. The stand is recyclable (it is intended for use again at further exhibitions) and includes material such as cork flooring (which is enviornmentally friendlier, for instance, than a wooden floor) and is also fully recyclable. It’s fair to assume that product packaging may change a little bit between now and 2050, but if we could put Peter Alwin’s ‘Snail’ in to production tomorrow then you might walk out of a store with packaging akin to that featured below. With that said, you don’t need to wait until 2050 to get this particular version. Those attending 100% Design, where Electrolux will present all eight of this year’s Design Lab finalists (23rd-26th September 2010), will be able to get hold of a bag featuring this design on one side for free (subject to availability).
