About Electrolux Design Lab
Established in 2003, Electrolux Design Lab is an annual global design competition open to undergraduate and graduate industrial design students who are invited to present innovative ideas for household appliances of the future.
The competition theme for 2012 is ‘Design Experience’. As demonstrated in the Cube by Electrolux, the world of professional cooking is all about the experience. It’s not about achieving the perfect inner temperature of a steak for the sake of science or performance. It’s about designing the best possible experience for your guests. The creative force behind the experience is the merger of intuitive and innovative appliances with the creativity of the chef and carefully selected high quality ingredients.
The brief for Electrolux Design Lab 2012 challenges design students to draw inspiration from professional experience creators (chefs, architects, interior designers, hotel designers etc.) to design home appliances that will provide a fuller sensory experience. It might be through state of the art technology or it might be through a clever blend of textures and surfaces
Additionally, and in keeping with the heritage of Electrolux, your concepts should reflect Scandinavian Design values – being sensitive to the environment, providing intuitive ease of use and aesthetic appeal.
The top finalists are invited to participate in a final global event and present their entries to a jury of high-level designers. The jury reviews the entries based on intuitive design, innovation and consumer insight.
Electrolux awards three prizes: 1st place is 5,000 EURO and a 6-month paid internship at an Electrolux global design center. The 2nd prize of 3,000 Euros and 3rd prize of 2,000 Euros are also on offer.
Electrolux Design Lab has led directly to jobs and business opportunities in the design field for many of the contestants. Several finalists are currently employed in one of the Electrolux Global Design centers and last year’s winner is doing his 6-month internship. Others have gone on to start successful design businesses.
