except for a couple…they’re all pretty impractical and unnecessary. That virtual reality helmet thing is the stupid idea I’ve ever heard. Why would you go through all the trouble of putting on a thought-reading helmet (nothing could ever go wrong with that of course) and visualizing food, and having a robot interpret it for you….when you can just MAKE A CALL or SEND A TEXT. what are these people smoking? Cuz I want some.

I echo other people’s sentiments that these are super cool ideas, but when will Electrolux actually start making them?

Really, shouldn’t Electrolux actually promise to develop the winner of the contest, rather than just give the designer a job?

Great futuristic designs, but in my humble opinion the only one that is practical and could be any kind of useful in our part of the Multiverse is DEFINITELY The Snail. Some of the designs are fun but, totaly unbelieavable and go against the basics of human nature and practicality – Food pills? Virtual reality cooking? “Portable” washing mashine that needs steam pipes installed in the walls? Really? :)

The Bio Robot Refrigerator is COOL, but is it even remotely plausible?

The Snail is by far the best design.
Its compact and practical. It can be used anywhere for food preparation, and to heat liquids, etc.
It can be used for other purposes too – it seems the most realistic tool that could actually be manufactured. I’d buy one!
The dishwasher is an interesting idea in terms of recycling food waste for other purposes.
Everything else looks cool, but not practical on many levels.
The wall mounted exterior refridgerator is not well thought out at all.

The design that works off of the premise that we will eat food in capsules in the future. Where is that idea coming from?

The Bio Robot refrigerator has the most votes. It seems like it disregards the whole way we use a refrigerator. Two things a refrigerator does.. keeps food cool and gives us easy access to that food. This design is so focused on the food preserving aspect that it completely ignores the user. Nothing in the design speaks to considering the needs of the user except the fact that it saves space- which was presented in the design breif!

In terms of giving us easy access to refrigerated food…
We operate off of visual cues (being able to see the items in the refrigerator) to use the refigerator. That is a simple habital event that it seems the designer didn’t consider. With this design do I recognize the item I want to retrieve by the green amorphous shape? Sure it’s cool but it needs some work.

I liked the snail because it is simple, interesting, and useful. It makes sense but it is also innovative. It re-examines the function of the original product. I also liked the External Refrigerator because it reconsiders key elements of how that functions and utilizes a resource that is strikingly analogous to the environment of the refrigerator- the natural environment. Very smart and simple.

    - – -
In general students should integrate more research and critical thinking in their design process. Less cool shit, more informed products. Ideation and innovation are great but good design takes form by examining real contexts and real problems. Some of these begin to try to do that, but it is more of a masquerade of addressing anything. Design research should happen before any process. Examine the way things are (currently)- find gaps in the way things are and then innovate/redefine/create from there. Don’t just design something from an objective you thought was important, find out what is important. What makes a refrigerator a refrigerator. How do people use it? How might they want to use it? What key characteristics do you have to keep or loose for that item to continue to function as that item or morph into a new item. If it morphs does that make sense- or does it fight the mental and event schema which most users would have when they approach that item.

I’m kind of sorry I wrote so much but I guess I am just starting to see a theme in lots of academic industrial design work I see and I feel it could be avoided if more designers or curriculums would address this in their process.
